Sofia Barroso

I believe in the beauty of ordinary things; learning to notice them can make everything interesting.

I capture often-overlooked, fleeting moments, like the way light dances on the surface of glass, bouncing layers of colors, or the elongated shadows cast over the walls every day at 6 pm.

Light, shadow, and color transform every moment into an ever-changing canvas, becoming subjects in their own right.

I'm interested in noticing these instances, contemplating them, and perhaps transforming them into something different, creating a piece of something new.

Artist Statement
Photography embraced as a daily practice has become the medium through which I indulge in the present. I capture fleeting moments—those often overlooked or rarely noticed. And I cherish these seemingly ordinary instances.

Through this practice, I uncover the allure of the mundane. It compels me to slow down, observe keenly, and decipher the nuanced visual language of time. Light, for me, plays the most interesting role, alongside colors and forms. Together, they transform my surroundings into an ever-changing canvas. Akin to the transient nature of moments, light itself is ephemeral, adding depth and temporality to my exploration.

I find it valuable to share these depictions and connect with those who find them worth contemplating. Some pieces live their best expression through their photographic form, whether printed conventionally on photographic paper or exploring materiality on surfaces like handmade cotton paper or natural fabrics.

Others, I transform into tangible forms by exploring various processes and materials. These techniques include painting, cyanotype printing, trace monotypes, and silkscreen printing, allowing me to integrate bodily engagement, materiality, and physical presence into my work. By working across these mediums and incorporating mixed elements, I embrace the notion of possibilities and challenge their conventional understandings, leading to continual discoveries through experimentation.

My artistic practice is an ongoing dialogue with my inner self. I am constantly questioning, challenging, encouraging, and validating my creative process, creating a dynamic interplay between introspection and creation. My work is my most valuable form of self-discovery, visually and tangibly expressing the dialogue within.
